All about the Bush Tour

Practically

If you book a trip through Afrikaya Leisure Travel, you will travel with the most comprehensive travel magazine in the travel industry well before departure (5 to 6 weeks). All information you need for preparation is listed here. If you have any questions after reading the folder, please contact us!

Passport and visa

You are responsible for the required travel documents on all trips: - A valid (international) passport (ID is not enough), including babies and children must have their own passport - proof of return ticket or ticket to a next destination. Visa for South- Africa will automatically receive you as an EU citizen on arrival. For the visa (maximum 90 days stay), 2 opposite pages are required in your passport. Your passport must be valid until 30 days after return. For Swaziland , the passport must be valid until 6 months after departure. The visa will be given at the border crossing. We will inform you when booking about the latest information. Participants who do not have Dutch nationality should inform the embassy of their country to the exact border documents. also for possible landings in other countries.

Accommodations

All accommodations are personally selected by us and are regularly checked for service, quality and hygiene. Afrikaya Leisure Travel strives to offer your holiday as cheap as possible without compromising the quality of the trip. We select small-scale 4 (sometimes 5 *) lodges, guest houses and hotels, preferably with spacious comfortable rooms, with their own (clean) bathroom and a good bed, preferably with a good breakfast, in a beautiful location Drinks at the bar are still payable. In remote areas, you will not find luxury hotels and usually stay in a good guesthouse or simpler lodge. Sometimes we choose to be aware of a (simple) hotel, because of its unique location or atmospheric surroundings, or just for a more expensive option, if this is really worth it.

Luggage and clothes

Most airlines carry 20 kg (sometimes 23 or even 30 kg) luggage for check-in, plus 7 kg of hand luggage. See your E-ticket or look at the website of the community. We advise not to take too much, with a lot of accommodation there is a laundry service which is certainly not too expensive. Good quality clothes, you can also buy cheap on site. Clothing that you want to leave behind is often more than welcome. A suitcase with hard shell is less practical and less often fits well in a luggage than a travel bag on wheels. Spinners (4 small wheels) are not handy in Africa, the trails are often too uneven. Preferably lock or leave your suitcase in plastic seals at the airport. Informal holiday clothes are permitted everywhere. At (very) luxury travel, the appearance of dinner with long pants or jacket (and tie) is sometimes appreciated.

Money affairs

South Africa and Swaziland have a very good value for money!

You do not need to bring a foreign currency if you go to South Africa, there are ATMs everywhere. In South Africa you pay with South African Rand (ZAR). ATMs are located in all major locations in South Africa. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, including at supermarkets, but not at petrol stations. Also in Swaziland you can pay with ZAR, these countries also have their own currency. It is very common for service and service a tipwill be given. In the Netherlands, the operating fee is often included in the price, but in southern Africa people are often completely dependent on tips and tips. It's always a small amount and our advice is: be generous. We advise you not to go to prayer. Pay better for delivered services, pay an additional fee for good service, buy your souvenirs from local businesses, sample local specialties and do not buy fresh fruit in the supermarket but at local / street stalls.

Health affairs

Inform at least 8 weeks before leaving at GP or GGD for personal medical advice.

Vaccinations DTP and Hepatitis-A (contagious jaundice) are recommended but are not mandatory. If you arrive within 7 days of a yellow feverland such as Zimbabwe or Zambia, a yellow fever vaccination for South Africa - Botswana - Namibia is required.

Malaria occurs in the summer months (October-May) in South Africa (Kruger National Park) and Swaziland. Malaria is usually prescribed for Malarone, the side effects of which are limited. The lodges in Malaria area are equipped with mosquito nets and / or air conditioning. Bringing a mosquito net yourself is not convenient.

You can further inform yourself by: * Rural Center Guidance Advisory * Tropen Care * GGD In case of medication use the leaflets and preferably a letter from your doctor about your medicine use.

In South Africa you can drink water from the tap, but it's not always good. Therefore, buy water in bottles, especially in other countries. Luxurious lodges will always provide water bottles. For people with a normal functioning immune system, toothpaste is no problem.

Traveling with Children under 18 years

Unabridged Birth Certificate As of October 1, 2014, new regulations will apply: Parents traveling with their own children must be able to show an original birth certificate of the traveling child (s) in addition to their passports and tickets; If only one of the parents passes with the child, he or she must be in addition to the valid birth certificate OR have a written and signed statement from the other parent who gives the child permission to travel with the other parent, OR official proof that the single parent has full custody and official control over the child (eg court judgment in custody case); OR if the other parent has died, a copy of the other parent's official death certificate must be taken instead of this declaration; Children who do not travel with their parents but with family members, acquaintances or other guardians must have an official written and signed statement in addition to the valid birth certificate in which both parents or legal guardians assert that the child has permission to travel with these persons, as well as copies of the passports of the parents or the legal guardian of the traveling child. A birth certificate is available from the municipality (5 working days to 3 weeks). For more information: South African Consulate in The Hague, weekdays between 14.00 and 16.00 phone number +31 (0) 70 392 4501.

Climate - Best travel time

Southern Africa is an ideal holiday destination all year long. It is not easy to say what the best travel time is, unless you go to Hermanus for the flower season or the whales. See also the country information South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia.

The seasons are inverted to those of us (summer is winter, autumn is spring). Each season has its own specialties. For example, the West Coast in the spring of Africa is wonderfully beautiful with flower carpets, winter is wildlife the best season and if you want to see whales, that may be from June to November, but the best months are September and October. When planning (and booking) your trip, it is also advisable to take into account the holiday periodsin South Africa. Especially Gauteng and Johannesburg: Easter, December to mid January, July to mid-August are (very) busy.

Internet - Telephone - Electricity

In South Africa, lodges sometimes have wireless internet. Internet cafes are located in all larger places, the speed is reasonable. In the rest of southern Africa, there are usually Internet cafes in tourist places. However, do not expect a fast connection, you may already be happy if it works (without alarm signals).

Of course, it is convenient to be accessible and to make calls. That gives a safe feeling, but can be very expensive. You can save by taking your own device and purchasing a SIM card on the spot with calling credit, so you can call cheap in the holiday country. In South Africa, registration is required today before the SIM can be activated. Making calls abroad makes you the cheapest through the public telephone (coins or cards) or hotel phone. The cost of this is low in our terms!

The mains voltage is 220 volts, just like us. However, you need a specific 3-pole plug. These are best sold on arrival, they are sold at any supermarket, at the local market, sometimes the tour guide has a few copies to buy. The so-called "world plug"ANWB is also useless. The type C plug fits.

Language

South Africa has 11 official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xosha and Zulu. In addition, other Afrikaans languages are spoken.

Time difference

In South Africa, it is the same time (GMT +2) during the summer time in Europe. In winter time it is in South Africa 1 hour later (GMT +1).

Safety

Unfortunately, many "Stoepstories" (bullshit stories) are told about South African countries, it is often not safer than nightly in Amsterdam. An exception is the major cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and, to a lesser extent, Cape Town and Windhoek. We advise you to avoid city centers and always be at the lodge for sunset. Of course, the common sense applies: leave no valuables in the hotel room, beware of ATMs, do not show a full trade show, take a taxi in the evening. Poverty is high in some areas, so do not tempt people.

Insurance

Traveling well insured is an absolute necessity. Medical and hospital expenses may be very high in certain countries, not to mention repatriation costs. The termination of travel insurance is mandatory . In addition, we advise you to cancel a cancellation insurance in the event that you can not leave for sickness or family circumstances or to cancel the trip. Afrikaya Leisure Travel can provide you with short-term travel and / or cancellation insurance, which must be noted at the time of booking. Flight Duration From Amsterdam (direct): - Johannesburg (direct) 11 o'clock - Cape Town (directly) 11.20 o'clock - Durban, only with transfer in eg Johannesburg, Cape Town or Dubai

Today, a visit to Pretoria (Union Buildings, Church Square and, if desired, Voortrekker Monument), after which the longest ride on this trip, we have just had it ...

  3. Day 3-4 Hoespruit

We drive the famous Panoramaroute (tour package) along Blyde River Canyon, with the Three Rondavels, waterfalls, glorious views (God's Window) and spectacular rock formations in Bourkes Luck Potholes. We can enjoy the private nature park in the late afternoon. Perhaps you still spot wildlife from your own terrace! We will visit Moholoholo(tour package). It is known from National Geografic, a unique project that captures animals, to return to nature after care. Here you can learn a lot about the nature of South Africa and wild life. One of the projects that the Afrikaya Trust supports! In the afternoon we can go back to the nature reserve for a nice nature walk or go swimming at a waterfall and / or visit the Blyde River Dam.

  4. Day 5-6 Kruger Park

We drive for a first exploration through the world famous Kruger National Park and make a game drive (safari) until the afternoon with our own car / bus (excursion package). In the afternoon we arrive in Komatipoort. The bar overlooking the river, where hippos and crocodiles live, is a wonderful place to drink a beer and talk afterwards. The next day we get up very early, to make a game drive (safari) with an open 4x4 all day (excursion package). In the evening we can discuss all the experiences during the braai or a potjie.

  5. Day 7-8 Swaziland

We drive to Swaziland and visit a Swazi village , where music and dance are central (excursion package ). The Mlilwane Game Reserve is a paradise for nature lovers and peace seekers. In this park you can walk around freely, go mountain biking or horseback riding and look for hippos, zebras and antelope species. We spend the night at the perhaps not super-luxurious but top-class Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge , unique on group travel! We prefer to have breakfast outside on the terrace overlooking the park or in the evening around the campfire.

  6. Day 9-10 Pongola Game Reserve

We stay in a luxury 5 * safari tent in the small and malaria free private reserve Pongola. The park encloses Lake Jozini, with the Lebombo mountains in the background. The reserve itself combines a landscape of mountains, bushveld and rivers with many animal species and a varied range of activities. During a safari you may see rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, kudu, buffalo, hyena, leopard, hippos, crocodiles, 12 species of antelope and about 350 different bird species. The area is also popular among fishermen (especially for catching Barbel and Tijgervis), but also Elephant or Black Rhino Tracking , a boat safari , canoe trips or a bushwalk are among the possibilities.

  7. Day 11-12 St-Lucia

We leave Swaziland and drive to Saint Lucia in Kwazulu-Natal, known by the adjacent iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the nearby Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. The town seems more like what we are used to, with shops, cafes and restaurants. With a bit of luck you will hear the hippos growl at dinner .... We make a boat cruise (excursion package) to spot hippos, crocodiles and many bird species (eg osprey and giant kingfisher). We visit Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park (excursion package) with an open 4x4. You can also enjoy walking along the beach or cycling through the nature reserve. In the season (July-December) you can also make a whale trip here.

  8. Day 13 Dolphin Coast

Wijnand was onze privé chauffeur.
