The city became known from the Nkomati Agreement that South Africa and Mozambique closed here in 1984, whereby Mozambique would refrain from supporting the ANC and South Africa would refrain from supporting RENAMO. In Komatipoort the N4 connects to the Mozambican highway EN4 (border post-Lembombo Mountains). This gives the city an important transit function.

River Hill Lodge 4 *

Day 8
Louis Trichardt

The northern part of the Limpopo province is named after the Soutpansbergen mountain range. Although the region is a typical Venda region, both Venda, Shangaan and Pedi artists live here.

The lodge is an excellent starting point to experience the unspoilt nature and culture of the Soutpansbergen and Limpopo Valley, where you can walk and mountain bike.

Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge 4*

Day 9
Louis Trichardt

One reason to visit the Soutpans area is the artists who have settled in the countryside around Elim. They work from their own houses, which are decorated according to the old traditions. In addition to the beautiful works of art, this also introduces you to the everyday life of these black tribes, in a way that is not too touristy.

Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge 4*

Day 21
Louis Trichardt

Bird watching can be arrange or leisure at your own.

Day 10
Mapungubwe

he Limpopo River forms the natural northern boundary with Zimbabwe and Botswana. The still young Mapungubwe National Park (founded in 2004) has manifested itself well in recent years. In 2006 the park won the prize for the best national park in South Africa. It has to be said: it offers a unique experience. Nature with its many baobab trees is an experience, the three-country point where the Sashe and Limpopo river separate Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa, offers excellent views. The archaeological tour is also very interesting.

Red rocks are interspersed here with a thick mopane forest field. The park has been on the World Heritage list since 2003 and that is not for nothing. The history of Mapungubwe is very interesting. This is mainly due to the archaeological finds in the park.

Leokwe Camp

Day 11
Mapungubwe

Early morning for visiting some ancient sites.

Leokwe Camp

Day 12
Entabeni

Entabeni (”place of the mountains”) is also located in the World Heritage area of the Water Mountains and is a 22,000 ha malaria-free Big 5 Game Reserve. The higher grasslands are separated by 600 meters high cliffs from the lower plateau, which is 3 degrees warmer. On Game Drives and walking safaris, accompanied by rangers, you have the chance to see lions, rhino, hyena, leopard, jackal, hippo etc … up close. Of course, everyone wants the big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino), but with 55 large mammal species, 50 species of grass, 300 species of flowers, 40 species of trees and amphibians, reptiles and insects, there is so much more to see … Because the camps are in the middle of the park, a visit by lions or other animals is not impossible! On the grasslands alone, 15 species of antelope are walking around.

wildside safari camp entabeni game reserve

Day 16
Kololo

In the adjacent Welgevonden Game Reserve (of which Kololo is also part, though there is a fence between the lodge and the park) you will find the ”Big Five”, the big game: Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo. With a bit of luck, you can also discover them from your own terrace.

Kololo 4*

Day 17
Madikwe

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a special park. The Big Five game park consists of both forest field and Kalahari. That means that sandy open plains alternate with grasslands. The park, therefore, has animals that you cannot see in the Kruger Park, such as the gemsbok (spiesbok or oryx). The Madikwe Game Reserve borders Botswana in the north. It is not accessible to day visitors, which guarantees exclusivity. The wildlife is good, with the chance of the Magnificent Seven (Big 5, wild dog and cheetah.
